Parents' Information: Youth Summer Coding Camps

How do I reserve a spot in a camp for my child?

  • In order to guarantee your spot in a camp, you must register before the first day of camp.  If you are not able to complete registration online, then you should contact the Program Director with your information who will complete the online registration for you.
  • All camps will have 20 seats available.

When is payment required?

  • The camp fee must be paid in full during the online enrollment process or on the first day of camp

What is the camp-to-staff ratio?

  • Our average camper to staff ratio is 10:1 but for younger aged campers and full camps, we will work to have a camper to staff ratio of 5:1.

What is the maximum camp enrollment?

  • Twenty campers is the maximum number of children that can enroll in any one of our summer camps.

What should my child bring to camp?

  • Campers should bring a drink and nut-free snack.  We will take a short break roughly 2 hours into the camp each day.  
  • We recommend that your child NOT bring the following items to camp: 
    • LEGO® bricks or other toys
    • Electronic devices, including but not limited to iPODs/MP3 players, CD players, video games, tablets and laptops.
  • Note: Pitt-Johnstown is not responsible for any personal items that are lost, stolen or misplaced during camp.

Do campers take home their projects after the camp?

  • For LEGO camps, since we use our LEGO® supplies in classes and camps throughout the year, campers do no take home projects or pieces. 
  • There are some occasion that campers will take home a non-LEGO® related project that they create during camp.
  • All campers take home a Pitt-Johnstown STEM Camp T-shirt from camp.

What is the typical age range – will my child be too young or old compared to the rest of the class?

  • Part of our camp experience is to encourage collaboration and teamwork.  Campers are grouped based on their age and skill level where appropriate.  In a full camp, comprised of beginner and intermediate campers, camp staff will be available to work with each group.  The base projects, lessons and software used in a class or camp are the same for all students; however, more experienced campers will work on intermediate or advanced projects that are more intricate, detailed, or enhanced for their abilities.

Are refunds provided?

  • As part of our policy, we will not grant full refunds requested within 2 weeks prior to the start of the camp session.  Refunds are only provided if requested at least two weeks prior to the start date.  
  • Refunds will NOT be offered for partial attendance when there is no advance notification. 
  • Accommodations may be made on a case-by-case basis for absences due to sickness.

What is your cancellation policy?

  • Pitt-Johnstown reserves the right to cancel any program due to low enrollment.   Upon cancellation, a full refund will be issued.

Can my child attend both the AM and PM camp during the same week, and what will he/she do during the lunch break between camps?

  • You must register for both camps during the week that you want your child to attend for a full day.   Please send a packed lunch with your child each day. Then, from noon-1 p.m., camp staff will be available to be your child and any other full day campers.

Will I receive confirmation following camp registration?

  • You will receive an email confirmation regarding your registration immediately upon completing the online process.  In addition, approximately 1 week prior to each camp that you will be attending, you will receive an email confirmation as a reminder and to provide any additional information that you need to know regarding the camp (such as building location, waiver forms, etc).  Please make sure your email address is correct and that you check your email frequently.

How will I be notified if there are changes (including additions) to the summer camp schedule?

  • Please monitor the 2017 Youth Summer STEM Camps web page for any changes to the schedule.   If a camp that you are registered for should change, you will receive an email or phone call.  

Are there other camp rules that my child should be aware of?

  • Our camp rules are simple.   All campers are expected to abide by the following:
    • Speak for yourself … not for anyone else.
    • Listen to others … then they will listen to you.
    • Avoid put downs … who needs them.
    • Participate in group activities and stay within the group.
    • Show respect … every person is important.
    • Take charge of yourself … you are responsible for you!
    • Have fun!

What are other Camp Policies?

  1. DROP OFF/PICK UP TIME POLICY:
    1. Please drop off your child between 8:45 and 8:55am each day for a morning camp and, between 12:45 and 12:55pm for an afternoon camp. You must arrive to pick up your child no later than 10 minutes after the camp day has ended.
  2. LATE PICK UP POLICY:
    1. Individuals authorized to pick up the child will be called ten minutes after the close of the camp session. After ten minutes, there will be a late charge fee of $10 for the first five minutes and $5 for each five minute increments after, payable at the time of pickup. If an emergency arises, please call the Program Director and leave a message that you will be late so we can explain to your child that you are on your way. Please note that repeated late pickups might result in termination from our program.
  3. DISMISSAL POLICY:
    1. Authorized Parents/Caregivers must sign children out of camp sessions. The only people that your child will be released to are those listed on your information form. All persons authorized to pick up students must be at least 16 years of age. If someone other than a parent will pick up your child, please give us prior written notice.
    2. If there is an emergency and no one on your list can pick up your child, the primary parent/guardian must call the Program Director to allow another adult to pick up the child or send a signed note of authorization with that person.
  4. TRANSFER POLICY:
    1. Campers may transfer to another camp as long as there is room in the camp.  A transfer must be coordinated with the Program Director.
  5. CAMP CONDUCT:
    1. Pitt-Johnstown reserves the right to release, without refund of program fees, any child whose behavior becomes unmanageable. This action will not be taken without verbal and written warnings. No children will be allowed to intentionally physically harm any other persons or person’s property while camp is in session.
