The Pitt-Johnstown Natural Sciences Division offers degrees in biology, chemistry, computer science, energy and earth resources, mathematics, physics, and psychology. The division offers programs to prepare students for advanced study in areas of medicine through a pre-medical professions program.
Students benefit from Pitt-Johnstown's strong emphasis on undergraduate research, which includes extensive opportunities to participate in faculty-mentored projects. Many students present their work at national conferences and publish their findings in professional journals. The annual Symposium for the Promotion of Academic and Creative Enquiry (SPACE), provides students with an opportunity to showcase their research findings.
In addition to classroom instruction and laboratory experience, students benefit from partnerships with professionals and organizations from throughout the region. A highly successful collaboration with the Windber Research Institute connects Pitt-Johnstown faculty and students with WRI scientists. Examples of this collaboration include:
Pitt-Johnstown offers a joint medical technology program with Conemaugh Health System in which students earn either a biology or chemistry degree from Pitt-Johnstown and a Certificate in Medical Technology from the hospital.
Students in most pre-health professions programs (Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Podiatry, and others) will complete a bachelor’s degree in a degree program at Pitt-Johnstown before proceeding to the doctoral program at the school of their choice. For some programs, such as Pre-Nutrition and Dietetics and Pre-Athletic Training, students will take course work (usually 60 credits over 2 years) at Pitt-Johnstown. During their second year, students apply for admission to the specific department at the Pittsburgh-Oakland campus to complete their degree requirements.
